Noragami is an action-packed anime series that follows the story of a minor god named Yato, who sets out to become a well-known deity with a massive following. Along the way, he meets Hiyori Iki, a young girl who becomes accidentally involved in the world of gods and spirits. Together with his Regalia, or divine weapon, Yukine, Yato embarks on a journey to fulfill his dream while facing off against dangerous foes and making new friends along the way.

Yato

Yato is this gloriously chaotic stray god who wears a tracksuit and a ridiculous grin like armor — he advertises himself for five-yen donations and odd jobs, which is both pathetic and adorable. He’s loud, theatrical, and somehow gets under everyone’s skin (in the best and worst ways), but there’s this weird, heavy loneliness tucked behind the jokes that sneaks out sometimes, like at midnight in an empty shrine. He treats his Regalia like family even while being annoyingly dramatic about it, and he has a habit of promising big things with zero follow-through — then somehow delivering when it counts. Oh, and he claims to hate conventions but will definitely pose heroically for snacks or praise.

Hiyori Iki

Hiyori is the scrappy, soft-hearted human who’s always popping between worlds like it’s a minor inconvenience — literally half-body-out-of-reality sometimes — and she handles it with way more grace than she should. She’s protective to a fault, shoos people out of danger while tripping over her own shoelaces, and will argue philosophy at breakfast if you let her (and then forget to finish breakfast). Kind, stubborn, and quietly brave, she’s the sort of person who quietly knits together other characters’ messes even when she’s bewildered herself. Also she hoards receipts and band-aids for reasons she won’t explain; very organized and also kind of chaotic, somehow.

Yukine

Yukine starts off as this annoying, petty teenager with a terrible temper and a taste for stealing—like, actual gutter brat energy—but he morphs into this painfully loyal sword who learns to carry guilt like a second jacket. He’s sarcastic and impulsive and will say the cruel thing before he thinks, then immediately feel worse than anyone else and try to make up for it awkwardly. There’s a raw, human rage under the surface that becomes protective devotion, and he’s also weirdly sentimental about small stray animals or leftover curry — very inconsistent tastes. He’s messy, grows up on screen, and you kind of want to smack him and hug him at the same time.

Bishamonten

Bishamonten (aka Bishamon) is a furious, honor-obsessed war goddess who runs a whole squad of Regalia like a drill sergeant with a soft heart you only see if you’re lucky. She collects weapons and grudges with equal fervor, maintains ridiculously high standards, and will purge demons with a glare that could strip paint — but she also obsesses over keeping everyone safe and will bake the worst cupcakes for morale (which she insists are morale-boosting). Proud and infuriatingly competent, she balances duty and a maternal streak so hard she sometimes forgets her own needs — and yes, she keeps a list of favors and slaps you with it like a tax ledger. She’s intimidating, loyal, and honestly kind of a softie trapped in armor.

Kofuku

Kofuku is the gloriously chaotic god of poverty who acts like sunshine ran through a blender — giggly, mischievous, and mildly terrifying in how carefree she is about calamity. She’s reckless, loves pranks, and will happily ruin your budget because she decided it was funny, but she also has a surprisingly deep intuition about people and an uncanny knack for surviving the worst situations. She claims to be broke and also casually owns a shrine full of weird trinkets (and possibly one spare coin that she treats like a treasure), so she’s equal parts chaotic and oddly resourceful. Basically, she’s the friend you both want at a party and want to hide your wallet from, forever smiling while everything explodes into confetti.
