He’s meticulous to the point of obsessiveness (folds napkins by color, probably) but also can flip to theatrical righteous fury in like two seconds, which is terrifying and kind of magnetic. He plays god with a terrifying confidence, but there’s also this lonely, theatrical streak — loves grand gestures and hates small talk, unless it’s a monologue. Honestly, he’s the poster child for “too smart for his own good,” and you can almost hear the soundtrack swelling whenever he makes a plan.

Touta Matsuda

Matsuda is the loud, bright burst of color in an otherwise grim investigation team — impulsive, emotional, and weirdly lovable, the kind of guy who screams before thinking then apologizes with a goofy grin. He’s not the sharpest tool but has an enormous heart and a surprising streak of bravery; also, he will absolutely judge your fashion choices while ordering way too many snacks. He panics, he flails, he cries, and somehow those very qualities make him refreshingly human among all the stoics. I swear he’d be the one to accidentally solve something because he ran into it while frantically looking for his phone.

Shuichi Aizawa

He’s a policeman of deep conviction, stoic but emotionally rich, and sometimes he looks like he’s carrying the weight of the world (because he kind of is). He can be stern and exacting, yet utterly soft when it comes to his family — a contradiction that makes him human and heartbreaking. There are little things that give him away, like the way he hums under his breath while doing paperwork (I swear he does), which is oddly sweet.

L

L is peak eccentric genius — hunched posture, weird sweets obsession, the world’s most intense poker face and then also this tiny grin when he’s figured you out. He solves puzzles with a voracious, childlike curiosity and zero patience for social niceties, and he’s both unnervingly calm and wildly unpredictable (sits like a frog, eats like a raccoon, and you love him for it). He’s brilliant in this chaotic, messy way — slips up socially but not intellectually — and somehow that contrast makes every scene with him feel electric. Also, absolutely the kind of guy who uses junk food as strategy fuel and will glare at you if you move his chair.

Misa Amane

Misa is all glitter, theatrics, and clutch-love — bubbly, dramatic, fashion-forward, and devoted to ridiculous extremes; like, she’ll do anything for the person she’s obsessed over, which is both adorable and a little terrifying. She’s a pop-idol glamour queen on the outside but also surprisingly pragmatic and eerily cunning when she needs to be; oscillates between ditzy and dangerously focused in the blink of an eye. She talks in hearts and exclamation points but has a steel core when the stakes are high, which makes her endlessly fascinating and unpredictable. Also I’m pretty sure she owns more sunglasses than life choices and cries into designer tissues.

Kanzo Mogi

Mogi is the quietly competent, steady presence — low-key, reliable, and the kind of detective who watches more than he talks, but when he speaks he’s often dead-on. He’s loyal and has this calm professionalism that balances out the team’s more dramatic members; also tends to have a dry sense of humor that sneaks up on you. Not flashy, not attention-seeking, just solid and trustworthy — the “if you need someone to stay calm and finish the job, call Mogi” guy. Little oddities: he might be bad at flirting but perfectly fine with tactical maps and suspiciously fond of old detective novels.

Watari

Watari is the mysterious, grandfatherly guardian with a secretive past — soft-spoken, impeccably polite, and oddly maternal towards L (in a very understated, cryptic way). He’s got layers: warm tea, gentle smiles, and then this entire other vibe where you sense he’s seen too much and knows too many things to be merely “caretaker.” He’s elegantly efficient, quietly resourceful, and somehow both fragile-looking and unshakeably composed at once. Also, he probably keeps a ridiculous collection of teacups and knows the exact right time to hand over a code or a biscuit, which is strangely endearing.
