Meet the characters from The Demon Hunter
Meng Chuan
Okay, Meng Chuan is that quietly intense type who stares at the horizon like he’s holding a secret meeting with the clouds — dramatic, yes, but also deadly precise in a fight. He’s a sword guy (of course) and somehow meditates before battles and then charges in two seconds later like he forgot he was being calm. Loves bitter tea and ruined silk — no idea why he keeps both — and he talks to his horse more than people, which is either adorable or slightly alarming. He’s the kind of leader who gives one-line orders and everyone obeys, though he’ll also rescue a stray cat in the middle of a campaign (truly). Every now and then he laughs too loud for the situation and you just know there’s more behind those eyes.
Liu Qiyue
Liu Qiyue is the brainy, slightly smug strategist who probably has three backup plans and a notebook full of angles (and doodles of dragons in the margins). She’s super composed in the war room but will lose it over bad handwriting — like, irrationally. A scholar at heart, loves calligraphy and tiny metaphors, but will also pick a fight with anyone who underestimates her archery skills (don’t test that). There’s a soft spot for underdogs, which is weird because she’ll lecture them for three hours before actually helping — tough love, I swear. Somehow reads everyone like an open scroll but forgets where she put her keys half the time.
Bai Nianyun
Bai Nianyun is the wild card with a laugh that can lift a funeral and a temper that could start one — equal parts kindness and chaotic magic. She flits between playful trickster and painfully sincere friend and she’s got this old song she hums when sewing demon seals on doorways (it’s both creepy and sweet). Obsessed with sweets and collects little bones in a jar for reasons she’ll only hint at, which makes her both charming and slightly unnerving. She’s reckless but oddly responsible, like leaving you a protective talisman and also a prank that leaves glitter everywhere. You never know if she’s about to tell a profound story or set off a series of exploding firecrackers; that’s the fun of her.
Meng Dajiang
Meng Dajiang is the grizzled mentor who smells faintly of incense and trouble, and yes he gives the best backhanded compliments in the world. He’s tough as nails, tells these terrible (amazing) dad jokes, and then proceeds to disarm a demon with one hand while knitting with the other — don’t ask how. A former wanderer who now runs a ramshackle tea house/dojo, he’s simultaneously sentimental and a total pain in the neck (in the best way). There’s a soft, almost embarrassing side where he keeps letters from old students in a drawer and reads them by lamplight like a sap. Also claims he hates poetry but can recite a hundred lines when drunk on plum wine.
Yan Jin
Yan Jin is slick, elegant, a little dangerous, and you always suspect he’s three steps ahead because he usually is — he wears his power like a perfectly tailored coat. He has this weird hobby collecting butterflies (taxidermy? framed?) which feels poetic until you realize he’s also the kind of person who cleans his sword before breakfast. Charming in a way that can make you forgive a lot — or question everything — and he smiles like he’s considering your lifespan as a snack. Loves order, hates mess, but will indulge in spontaneous midnight solos on a flute that no one asked for (and it’s somehow beautiful). He’s the velvet-gloved fist of the region; very dangerous, but stylish about it.
Yun Qingping
Yun Qingping is the tranquil wanderer who pretends not to care about fame but definitely has stories about famous people he met on trains (maybe true, maybe embellished). A healer with a dry wit, he’s always barefoot in weird places and keeps a tiny medicinal garden in his sleeve — yes, actually a sleeve garden. He follows a strict code of peace until someone insults his friends, then suddenly it’s not peaceful anymore and you remembered wrong, he’s fierce. He quotes ancient proverbs and then immediately ruins the moment with a terrible pun, which somehow makes him more endearing, not less. Slightly forgetful about names (including his own once, allegedly), but never forgets a face or a promise.
