About “Legend of the Galactic Heroes” in a few words:

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a science fiction anime series set in a distant future where two powerful interstellar factions, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, engage in a massive war that spans centuries. The story follows two charismatic and intelligent military leaders, Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li, as they climb the ranks of their respective armies and become key players in the conflict. The series explores themes such as politics, war, and the impact of individual choices on history.

Meet the characters from Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Reinhard von Lohengramm

Okay, Reinhard is that incandescent, unstoppable force of charisma and ambition — like a comet with manners, really. He’s brilliant, ruthless when he has to be, and somehow also sentimental about family portraits and old grudges (he collects tiny medals and old love letters? maybe both). He wants to remake the galaxy because he thinks he can do better, which is terrifying and oddly inspiring at the same time. Also he can be shockingly childish in private — teasing, pouting, probably steals biscuits from meetings — but in battle he’s cold and dazzling and utterly inevitable.

Wolfgang Mittermeyer

Mittermeyer is the elegant, blade-sharp knight type with a heart of tin foil — noble, steady, and always ready to charge at the right moment. He’s this calm tactical rock; you get the sense he drinks champagne before he gives a rousing speech (or was it cocoa? I swear it’s champagne, but who knows). Loyal to Reinhard in a way that feels like family, has weirdly strict rules about toasts and hats, and yet he’d pet a stray dog mid-campaign without thinking twice. There’s a soft, almost embarrassed side to him — he hates theatrics but occasionally writes bad poetry about dawns and battle flags.

Julian Mintz

Julian is the earnest, painfully practical lifeline who grows into something much steadier than he ever thought he’d be, like a notebook that turns into a map. He’s clever, morally solid, and annoyingly organized (his files, his pens, the exact way he makes tea — but also he keeps one wild sock, don’t ask why). He watches people, learns, and then quietly becomes indispensable; loyalty is his superpower, even if he blushes at compliments. Oh, and he seems mild but can be stubbornly brave in a way that sneaks up on everyone, including himself.

Yang Wen-li

Yang is the lovable, coffee-addicted anti-hero who hates war but somehow knows every tactic in the book (and probably wrote the footnotes). He’s lazy and disheveled and will absolutely binge political history instead of sleeping, yet in a crunch he’s tetrarch-level brilliant and a little bit terrifying. He says he’s just a historian, but also undermines generals with world-weary asides and shocking last-minute genius — classic reluctant savior energy. Also, tiny detail: he obsesses over pastries when stressed and will defend a good croissant like it’s a state secret.

Frederica Greenhill

Frederica is the adorable but razor-sharp aide who defies the “cute assistant” trope by being terrifyingly competent and quietly fierce. She’s loyal to Yang like glue, practical to an extreme, and can juggle three crisis reports and a teacup without blinking (though sometimes she forgets where she put her gloves; that happens). There’s this sunny, almost mischievous streak — she’ll sass senior officers and then bake them cookies that are suspiciously over-buttered. Also, she has a notebook for everything, including a doodle shelf of weird little monster drawings that she never shows anyone.

Oskar von Reuenthal

Reuenthal is the brooding, theatrical genius with a tragic streak so thick you could spread it on toast — brilliant, unstable, and magnetic in an exhausting way. He swings between reckless bravado and deep, sudden tenderness (like he’ll shout at a staff meeting and then cradle a wounded bird in his cloak, true story maybe). His loyalties are messy and passionate, and he drinks and smokes with a grin that says “watch me or don’t, I probably won’t notice.” Also, he’s inexplicably fond of roses and bad puns, which somehow makes him more human and less doom-cloud.

Dusty Attemborough

Dusty is that grizzled veteran commander who sounds like he was born on a battleship and prefers things blunt and honest — canonically curt, maybe a little crotchety, in a lovable way. He’s got near-impenetrable common sense, gives the kind of orders that make sense even if you’re half-asleep, and will mock pompous admirals into silence. But don’t be fooled: under the bark is a weirdly sentimental guy who writes terrible sonnets at 3 a.m. (or so rumour says), and he actually cries at operas, quietly. He’s the kind of leader you want on your side and also the one who steals your last biscuit.

Olivier Poplin

Olivier is the fastidious, hyper-organized staff officer who treats logistics like a sacred art and probably alphabetizes the galaxy for fun. He’s calm, methodical, loves numbers and schedules, and has a fondness for crisply folded handkerchiefs that is both admirable and slightly alarming. He can be dry and bureaucratic — the person you roll your eyes at in peacetime but thank loudly when everything goes right. Quirky fact: he claims he loathes music but actually hums terribly off-key at midnight; don’t tell him I know.

Walter von Schonkopf

Walter is the stolid, old-school aristocrat with impeccable etiquette and a fondness for tradition that borders on stubborn obsession. He’s stern and strict, follows codes of honor like a rulebook, but also surprises people by being unexpectedly witty and sometimes clumsy (trips over carpets, knocks over tea — aristocratic slapstick!). He’s loyal to duty and careful in battle plans, the kind who prefers a measured approach, though he has a secret weakness for ridiculous romance novels. And yes, he keeps a tiny pocket watch that he polishes like it’s a national treasure.
