Meet the characters from Luca
Luca Paguro
Okay, Luca is that adorably awkward kid who lives in his shelly little world until the surface (and a Vespa) drags him out — shy, curious, and awkward in the best way. He’s endlessly fascinated by humans and gelato and all the smells of the town, but also terrified of, like, literally everything (yet will jump off cliffs if the moment feels right). Sweet, bumbling, and honestly kind of a nerd about pasta shapes — I’m not kidding, he notices the difference — he’s full of quiet bravery that sneaks up on you. Also has this weird habit of collecting smooth pebbles? Probably irrelevant, but cute.
Alberto Scorfano
Alberto is the loud-mouthed, wind-in-his-hair friend who claims he’s lived a hundred lives on the surface (exaggerator!) but is secretly very soft and ridiculously loyal. He’s the kid with the scooter obsession and the “rules don’t apply to me” grin, always scheming something half-brilliant and half-terrifying — and proud of both. He brags, he fibs a little, he invents treasure maps, and then gets oddly sentimental about sunsets (don’t tell him I said that). Also possibly allergic to authority; definite poet at 2am in his head.
Giacomo
Giacomo is the classic overprotective sea dad — stern, practical, full of rules about “the surface” like it’s some bedtime story threat — but you can tell he’s doing it from a place of love. Grumpy exterior, soft center, has a million very specific fishing tricks and a suspiciously good knack for shell arranging (very OCD in a cute way). He repeats the same advice like five times but you notice he’s watching the kids even when he pretends not to, and he’ll surprise you by humming when he thinks no one’s listening. Might have once tried to invent a sea-proof to-do list; I can’t prove it but I believe it.
Daniela
Daniela is the no-nonsense, take-care-of-business mom who could bench-press your worries away and also knit you a sweater while doing it. Fierce protector, practical problem-solver, but also the person who hides tiny treats and leaves secret notes — like tough love with glitter. People underestimate how much she smiles (rarely, but then you see it and your heart melts), and she’s got this uncanny radar for when the kids are up to something. Somehow also a master of sandwich engineering? She is.
Lorenzo
Lorenzo pops up as that quietly steady kid — maybe practical, maybe dreamy, who knows — he’s the type who maps tides and stores silly little facts and sometimes forgets where he put his keys. Responsible-ish (depending on the day), likes to watch the horizon and imagine huge things, but also will binge on tiny pastries and deny it. He’s the friend who gives good advice in four words or fewer and suddenly becomes inexplicably nostalgic about old fishing nets. Slightly mysterious but in a cozy, familiar way.
Giulia
Giulia is spark and elbow grease: fearless, curious, and slightly chaotic in the best possible way — she’ll race you, fix a boat, and call you out if you’re being ridiculous. Smart and stubborn, with a laugh that’s half dare and half warm, she’s the friend who drags everyone into trouble and then engineers their escape. Proud little rebel with a tender spot for the weird kids (yes, Luca), and also collects stickers like trophies — organized chaos queen. She says she hates rules but will absolutely make a giant checklist for the Portorosso race; of course she will.
Eugenio
Eugenio feels like the village official who’s equal parts pomp and soft heart — loves ceremony, loves a good ribbon, and will insist on rules while secretly enjoying mischief. He’s the one who applauds tradition but has a weirdly specific fondness for tiny pastries at dawn (don’t ask why, he won’t tell you). A bit officious, easily flustered when plans go sideways, but honestly kind and prone to small, awkward acts of generosity. Think bureaucrat who cries at comedies and then writes you a very formal apology for it.
Massimo
Massimo is the enormous soft-focus Dad — big, quiet, a little intimidating at first (massive arms, don’t mess with him), but his whole thing is Protect-and-Make-People-Feel-Safe. He’s a craftsman with emotions, low on words, high on meaning, and will cook you something that tastes like a hug and then refuse to admit he cares. Protective of his daughter (duh), surprisingly tender (and loves music in a way that sneaks up on you), plus a secret obsession with tiny carved boats or maybe coins? Honestly, he collects something nice.
