Meet the characters from Over the Garden Wall

Wirt

Wirt is the awkward, poetic older brother who looks like he wandered out of a moody painting and into a children’s story — always a little lost in his own head and usually narrating things dramatically (yes, he thinks of himself as a tragic hero, even when he’s just trying to find the second-best path). He overthinks everything to a miraculous degree — will rehearse one sentence a dozen times, then trip over his shoelaces — but when it counts he surprises himself (and you) with quiet bravery. He wears that ridiculous red pointy hat and a cape, which somehow makes him both ridiculous and instantly sympathetic; also, he plays a little music sometimes, or hums, or pretends to — I can never keep track. He’s awkward, stubborn, sweet in the way that makes you want to hug him and also shake him; honestly, he’s both the most and least dramatic character at once.

Gregory

Gregory is pure, bouncy chaos in kid-form and possibly the best companion anyone could have for wandering into creepy forests — he’s fearless, endlessly upbeat, and convinced that every odd thing is either a friend or a snack. He carries a frog (whose name changes depending on the mood — Jason Funderburker? Or maybe Frog? Don’t quote me) and treats it like a royal subject or a stuffed animal, or both; he also has pockets full of snacks and at least three imaginary emergency plans. He’s the one saying things like “let’s do that!” and then doing it, and somehow his cheerfulness unravels complicated, grown-up knots — like a toy hammer for feelings. He can be infuriatingly random (he’ll tell a joke mid-disaster) but he’s also stubbornly loyal and occasionally wiser than anyone expects.

Beatrice

Beatrice is the sharp-tongued, sardonic bluebird who will roll her eyes at you and then save your life with the same clipped tone — basically the friend who hands out truth like candy and pretends not to care. She’s pragmatic to the bone, full of snark, and has this weird combination of adult cynicism and lingering embarrassment about her own past (there’s some cursed-or-regrettable backstory, or maybe I’m misremembering the details — but it DEFINITELY haunts her). She’ll boss Wirt and Greg around, make brutally honest remarks, and then, if you watch closely, do something quietly kind and immediately try to act like she didn’t. Cold surface, soft center — and yes, she will judge your taste in hats while secretly being protective; don’t tell her I said that.
