About “Velma” in a few words:

“Velma” is an animated TV series on HBO Max based on the character Velma Dinkley from the Scooby-Doo franchise, developed by Charlie Grandy. It features executive producer Mindy Kaling voicing the titular character, along with Sam Richardson, Constance Wu and Glenn Howerton in supporting roles. Unlike other Scooby-Doo series, it focuses on the human members of Mystery Inc. before their official formation and centers around Velma trying to solve a mystery involving her mother’s disappearance and the murders of local teenage girls. The show is a mix of mystery, horror and comedy, with a “love quadrangle” at its core.

Meet the characters from Velma

Daphne Blake

Daphne is the fabulously fashionable chaos magnet of the gang — totally into scarves and mystery-solving and somehow always getting into (and out of) trouble. She looks like a model who solves crimes on the side, but also trips over literally nothing and then flips into a gymnastic escape like it was planned. Surprisingly resourceful — she’ll MacGyver a distraction using makeup, a hairpin, and sheer dramatic flair — and also kind of a soft heart who calls monsters “poor misunderstood things” sometimes. Oh and she hoards candles? Or was that vintage purses… either way, she’s the flashy, stubborn glue who refuses to be sidelined.

Norville Rogers

Norville (yes, Shaggy — but let’s be formal for a sec) is peak laid-back, perpetually hungry, and driven by snacks more than logic, which somehow becomes a superpower when running from danger. He’s hilarious coward-level one minute and improbably brave the next (like, will sprint away screaming but then protect a friend with a sandwich in hand). He smells faintly of deli meat and optimism, collects odd condiments, and believes deeply in the healing power of a good nap. Loyal to a fault and always surprised he’s still alive after the day’s chaos, he’s the lovable, accidental hero of the bunch.

Velma Dinkley

Velma is the brain, the pulse, the pocket protector of mystery squads everywhere — analytic, relentlessly curious, and a smidge judgey but in a useful way. She lives for clues and comfort (sweaters and problem sets), blurting “Jinkies!” when she finds something, then immediately over-explaining it with an enthusiastic flowchart. She’s practical and dry but secretly collects tiny trinkets from every case, and sometimes she’s clumsy in social situations even though she’s a master of deduction. Basically: glasses on, world analyzed, snacks in the bag, and somehow always ten steps ahead even while misplacing her keys.

Fred Jones

Fred is the all-American trap-obsessed leader who loves blue sweaters, maps, and overcomplicating simple plans into Rube Goldberg masterpieces. He’s calm, decisive, and convinced there’s a right way to unmask a villain — which usually involves a dramatic entrance and at least three mechanical nuances nobody asked for. Surprisingly sentimental (he keeps a scrapbook? a sock? a map of the group’s first case), and occasionally stubborn to the point of pratfall-level comedy, he genuinely believes teamwork will save the day. He’s the organizer, the driver, the guy who will literally yell “Hold positions!” while also tripping over the rug he placed for tactical reasons.
