Meet the characters from The Simpsons

Homer Simpson

Homer is the gloriously flawed, donut-loving heart of the Simpson clan, a walking “D’oh” and the king of sudden, deeply stupid ideas. He’s lazy, loud, and somehow devoted — like he’ll forget your birthday but will also eat a donut for two people (don’t ask). He works at the nuclear plant which is both a joke and his identity, and he is shockingly capable of bizarre heroics when it matters. He claims to hate responsibility but shows up for his kids in the weirdest, sloppiest ways, and yes, he can be surprisingly sentimental (also oddly competent when it counts).

Marge Simpson

Marge is the endlessly patient, moral center with the impossible blue hair that could hide a whole other sitcom (seriously, what is in there?). She’s the fixer — keeps the family from literally falling apart — but also secretly stubborn and maybe once had a rebellious streak (there was definitely a phase, I’m almost sure). She does the PTA, cooks, nags, forgives, and will flip her lid if you mess with her kids, which is simultaneously terrifying and sweet. I love that she seems prim but once took a roller-skating job or something ridiculous like that — she’s full of surprises. Also she hoards candles and has a way of giving you a look that says you’ve disappointed her and yourself.

Bart Simpson

Bart is the perennial troublemaker: skateboard, slingshot, “Eat my shorts!” — you know the drill, and it’s glorious. He’s clever in that sneaky, prank-engineering way, always one step ahead of authority (well, most of the time), and he genuinely loves chaos, which is adorable and terrifying. Underneath the mischief is a kid who craves attention and will randomly show a softer side, like when he actually worries about Lisa (ugh, emotional blackmail works). He has this weird superhero alter ego thing and also writes on a chalkboard for a living in the intro, which is both meta and perfect. Also he collects action figures and once sold his soul for a comic book, or at least he would have, probably.

Lisa Simpson

Lisa is the overachieving, saxophone-playing moral compass who will absolutely give you a lecture on ethics and then cry softly about being lonely (it’s tragic and cute). She’s brainy, passionate about the planet, animals, and justice — vegetarian, feminist, precocious — and yet she can be insufferably smug, which makes her oddly lovable. There are episodes where she acts like a tiny revolutionary and others where she just wants someone to get her, which is painfully relatable. She also has weird little obsessions (badgers? I could be misremembering) and a surprising talent for pulling off ambitious schemes when it matters. Honestly, she’s both a genius and a kid who still wants bedtime stories, and that contrast slays me.

Maggie Simpson

Maggie is the tiny pacifier-sucking enigma who somehow steals every scene without saying much (and when she does speak, it’s memorable). She’s quiet, observant, oddly resourceful — like, baby-hero resourceful — and there’s something hilarious about a baby being the calm center among this chaos. Also, she has a history of accidental menace (remember Mr. Burns? or is that a weird dream?) and a soft spot for her rabbit toy, which she loves more than anyone should love a stuffed animal. She’s basically adorable, mysterious, and possibly plotting world dominance between naps.
