He invented half the ridiculous things that cause everyone else’s problems and then abandoned them like bad pets, which is somehow both heroic and selfish. People gush about his adventurous spirit but also whisper about his terrible family dinners (I mean, who wouldn’t?), and honestly he probably smelled faintly of cigar smoke and cologne even in the wilderness. He’s basically the mythic tragic father figure — charming, reckless, and forever leaving a trail of both trophies and emotional wreckage.

The Alchemist

The Alchemist is this delightfully creepy, hooded tinkerer who seems like he walks straight out of a Gothic chemistry set — equal parts occultist and mad scientist. He mutters about transmutations and secret elixirs while arranging jars that may or may not be alive, and you never know if he’s brewing a cure or a curse (both, probably). He has an odd fondness for tiny medals and probably keeps a ledger full of people’s secrets, which he consults like it’s a cookbook. Also, sometimes he’s terrifyingly practical and other times he gives you a warm cup of tea and a poem, which makes him confusing in the best way.

Dr. Orpheus

Dr. Orpheus is the earnest occult mentor who wears robes and reads ancient prophecy like it’s a bedtime story — he’s spooky, sincere, and kind of a dad in a very goth way. He’s constantly summoning or banishing cosmic nastiness while offering surprisingly solid life advice and occasionally playing the lute, I think — or was that a recorder? Either way, he’s stoic but awkwardly humble, the sort of guy who has seen horrors and also knitted a sweater for his cat. He operates with this weird confidence that everything will be fine if you respect the ritual and also don’t microwave metal, which feels oddly practical.

Brock Samson

Brock is peak macho bodyguard brilliance — deadly, unflappable, and somehow the safest person to have punch you through a moon base and then make you tea. He’s a walking action movie who eats danger for breakfast and has a weirdly soft spot for the Venture kids even though he’ll glare murder at anyone who breathes funny. He hates bureaucracy, loves knives, and probably has a sanctuary of secret sweaters that ruin his “tough guy” rep, just saying. He screams competence but also hums show tunes when stressed, which is a tiny trait that haunts me in the best possible way.

Dean Venture

Dean is the adolescent, impressionable wannabe hero who tries very hard to be brave and usually ends up being awkwardly adorable instead. He idolizes legacy and adventure but trips over the basics — like, emotional maturity is optional and also allergic to him. He collects weird memorabilia, can be obnoxiously sentimental, and somehow thinks he’s one scowl away from being a tragic antihero (spoiler: not quite yet). He’s both infuriatingly vain and heartbreakingly earnest, a walking contradiction in a bandana.

Billy Quizboy

Billy is the relentlessly chirpy kid genius slash sidekick who knows an embarrassing amount about obscure trivia and also hugs people at the most inappropriate times. He’s earnest to the point of being a meme, the kind of character who will invent a gadget and then forgive you for stealing it, maybe, if you promise to return it. He cheerleads optimism like it’s a full-time job and sometimes his cheeriness edges into unsettling, but mostly in the charmingly obsessive way. Also, he probably has a folder labelled “Everyone I Will Save” and it’s oddly organized.

Dr. Venture

Dr. Thaddeus “Rusty” Venture is the washed-up genius who reads superhero comics like inspiration and life lessons, but mostly ends up as a cautionary tale in khakis. He’s brilliant and cheap and emotionally stunted, a man who can design a rocket but can’t quite design a healthy relationship with his sons. He complains about the world while simultaneously contributing to the chaos, which is both tragic and comic, and he has a shameful collection of action figures that he insists are “for research.” He’s the kind of guy who’d win a Nobel and then lose his keys in the lab trash, and you absolutely love to hate him.

Hank Venture

Hank is the swaggering twin who’s all bravado, strange hobbies, and bravely performing masculinity like it’s a high-school play (with better costumes). He’s into knives, stunts, and old-timey heroics, but also gets weirdly poetic about dumb things like sock arrangement and volcanoes. He’s loud, impulsive, and somehow emotionally complicated under the bandana — like, he’ll punch a wall for honor and then write a sappy haiku about it two hours later. He’s the kind of reckless that’s borderline dangerous and also kind of romantic in a ridiculous, teenage way.
