Nanami Momozono

Nanami is the absolute heart of the show — tough, endlessly kind, and totally the kind of person who trips over nothing but still gets things done. She’s practical to a fault, juggling godly duties with totally human laundry and somehow makes cold porridge look like a statement of leadership. There’s this stubborn, fierce protectiveness that comes out when people she cares about are in trouble, and it sneaks up on you fast. Also she has a weirdly specific obsession with milk or tea? I can never remember; she definitely hoards snacks though. She messes up, she apologizes a lot, but then she’ll quietly fix everything and make others feel like they’re the only person in the world — annoying, in the best way.

Tomoe

Tomoe is that dramatic, sharp-tongued fox familiar who is equal parts ancient menace and reluctant sap. He’s sarcastic and proud and will berate you for breathing wrong, but then he’ll turn around and be this absurdly devoted, protective creature who lives for Nanami’s chaos. He has a million rules and grudges but also a soft spot that he hides behind insults — also probably collects tiny, useless trinkets for some reason. Sometimes he acts like he hates being fussed over and then will show up with a ridiculous flower or a bowl of something he thinks is human food — it’s almost predictable. Honestly, he’s theatrical, loyal, a little traumatic, and impossibly, infuriatingly charming.

Mikage

Mikage is the cool, composed former land god with the sort of calm that makes you think he definitely drinks tea all day (and maybe reads old maps?). He’s thoughtful, a bit manipulative at times — not in a bad soap-opera way but in that “plans ten steps ahead” kind of way. There’s a melancholy to him, like someone who carries the weight of a lot of past mistakes and smiles politely while doing it. He can be both guardian and puppetmaster, which is unnerving and kind of fascinating; plus he’s oddly fond of giving advice he doesn’t always follow.

Kurama

Kurama is the stylish, low-key flirt of the bunch — elegant, sly, and always just a little more refined than everyone else. He moves like he’s in slow motion, speaks in riddles sometimes, and then laughs like a person who ate too much sugar as a kid. There’s a seriousness when duty calls, but he also bakes? No wait, was that someone else — anyway he enjoys order and small comforts like hot baths and dramatic sighs. Basically classy, a tiny bit distant, and secretly soft when people least expect it.

Mizuki

Mizuki is all wide eyes and earnest loyalty, like a puppy who read too many etiquette books. He’s awkward, apologizes like it’s a hobby, and is absolutely obsessed with being useful — sometimes to the point of overcompensating. There’s this sweet, nervous energy about him, but also a streak of ambition and a surprising sharpness when he needs to be scary (which is rare but memorable). He hoards tiny things (buttons? pebbles?) and has the most melodramatic reactions to tea that I’ve ever seen. He often makes others feel guilty for the smallest flaws and then beams like it’s the best day of his life.

Onikiri

Onikiri is loud, blunt, and tastes extremely keen on violence — like a walking, shouting war drum who wears a grin. He’s fiercely loyal and will charge into nonsense without asking, which is both heroic and predictably chaotic. Despite the bloodthirsty exterior he has weirdly tender moments and a looped fondness for stupid jokes. Also, he’s the kind of guy who would steal your sandwich and then try to apologize by polishing your sword.

Kotetsu

Kotetsu is Onikiri’s perfect partner-in-crime: same brutal enthusiasm but with a smidge more tact (or maybe less tact, it’s hard to tell). He’s all jokes and boasts and will loudly misremember important details just to keep the mood up. When the chips are down he turns into this terrifyingly effective guardian, which makes his earlier bluster both funny and kind of awesome. Also, inexplicably loves sweets — like, will stab a demon and then demand candy; it’s a mood.
