Emily is a live-wire and a survivor — sharp, impatient, and fiercely protective of the people she cares about, even when she makes terrible plans that somehow work. She’s practical to the point of hoarding duct tape and teabags, but also the kind of person who will insist on a bedtime story in the middle of a siege. There’s a humor that crops up at the worst possible times (which is honestly kind of her superpower), and she’s shockingly good at sewing up more than just fabric. She swears she hates small talk but then will corner you for an hour about family recipes.

Sarah Gresham

Sarah is soft-seeming but not soft in reality — emotionally intelligent, stubborn in a quiet way, and the glue (annoying but necessary) who holds the little group dynamics together. She’ll make soup, organize routes on a map, and then give you a cold glare that cuts right through panic — very efficient. She collects ceramic birds (or maybe that’s something she used to do; memory’s fuzzy), and has an addictive habit of correcting people’s grammar mid-crisis, bless her. Loving, practical, and with a slightly unnerving ability to remember everyone’s birthdays even when the world ends.

Bill Ward

Bill is classic gruff-survivor dad energy — loud boots, louder opinions, but he’s basically a teddy bear if you get past the beard and the barbed humor. Ex-military? Maybe, or maybe he just watches a lot of old war films and practices knots — either way he knows how to command and how to bribe for information (peanuts and bad dad jokes). He cries at sunrise sometimes, which is delightful and contradictory, and he’s suspicious of anything that smells like bureaucracy. Honest to a fault, stubborn, and will argue with a toaster if it refuses to cooperate.

Kariem Gat Wich Machar

Kariem — yes, the name is a mouthful and he leans into it — is calm, enigmatic, and deceptively charismatic, like someone who’s seen and survived more than you can imagine and is oddly amused by your panic. He’s got this traveller’s knack for reading landscapes and people; gives advice in short, strangely poetic sentences and then smokes a cigarette awkwardly (maybe he doesn’t actually smoke, he just looks like it). He’s loyal but private, and has a ridiculous collection of lucky stones that may or may not be real luck-givers. Mysterious but warm, the kind of person you want on your side and slightly worry about because he knows too much.

Tom

Tom is impulsive and a bit of a mess in the best way — young, quick with a grin, always volunteering for the stupid dangerous task and somehow surviving it (miracle or luck? both). He’s tech-curious, fidgets with radios and batteries like they’re toys, and hoards mismatched socks for reasons he can’t explain. Petulant sometimes, heroic another time, and too sentimental about old comics that he swears are essential survival reading. He’s loud, honest, and secretly brave — and also cries at dog commercials, no shame.

Jonathan Gresham

Jonathan is the stubborn moral center who insists there’s a right way to do things even when the map burned up two days ago — very principled, sometimes infuriatingly so. He’s the planner, the one who drafts lists and justifications and occasionally crumbles under the weight of having to choose. He loves crossword puzzles, makes terrible puns that somehow break the tension, and will defend his family with a fierce, lumbering loyalty. He tries to be fair, and fails sometimes, but oh god he always tries.

Nathan

Nathan is quietly fierce in a different register — introspective, artistic, probably sketching the alien machines in a little black notebook while everyone else yells. He’s fragile in a way that’s not weakness, more like a crystal that bends rather than breaks; very loyal, unexpectedly brave when it counts. He’s a little awkward with people, terrible at small talk, brilliant at noticing tiny details (like the exact pattern of scorch marks), and has a weird love for bad 80s ballads. Sensitive, weirdly pragmatic, and oddly comforting to be around.

Chloe Dumont

Chloe is sharp as a tack, a nosy, fearless journalist-type who will pry open secrets with a grin and a cigarette in hand (or she would if she smoked; maybe she doesn’t — it’s complicated).
