Meet the characters from Over the Hedge

RJ

Oh RJ, the schemer with that too-charming grin — he’s the kind of raccoon who can sell you a plan and then somehow convince you it’s ethical, promise. Brilliant, quick-witted, and always juggling a dozen back-up schemes (and snacks), he’s the classic con artist with a surprisingly soft spot — especially for his oddly complicated version of family. He swears he’s meticulous but will forget where he put the blueprints, like, every five minutes, and then wing it and somehow it works; very infuriating, very lovable. Also I swear he collects tiny shiny things in a little box? Or was that another raccoon I met once…

Verne

Verne is the anxious little turtle who thinks rules are glorious and also totally negotiable if you say “safety” in a dramatic voice. He’s the planner and moral compass of the group — cautious, earnest, a bit prim — but secretly he enjoys the adrenaline of being dragged into chaos (don’t tell him I said that). He’s stubborn in the best way, sticks to his principles unless he doesn’t, which is what makes him real, you know? And he has this slightly tragic fondness for perfectly organized piles of leaves; like, he literally sleeps better after folding them.

Hammy

Hammy is pure kinetic energy — the squirrel who moves like a blur and thinks at light speed, which is adorable until you realize he also has the attention span of a goldfish with a jetpack. He’s naive and goofy and says the funniest one-liners at the worst possible times, but somehow his impulsiveness saves the day more often than not (miracles happen!). He’ll bounce between hyperactive chaos and, weirdly, these tiny moments of zen where he’ll nibble a nut and stare at the sky like a philosopher; very confusing, very charming. Also I refuse to accept that he doesn’t own a tiny superhero cape in the attic somewhere.

Stella

Stella is the feisty, dramatic one — sharp tongue, sharper fashion sense (in my head she absolutely wears a scarf), and she’ll clap back with a look that could silence a marching band. Loyal, fierce, and unapologetically theatrical, she’s the friend you want in a scrape because she brings attitude and, like, spice packets for snacks. She’s got layers — practical but prone to melodrama — which makes her both hilarious and unexpectedly tender in quieter scenes. Side note: I could swear she hums show tunes when plotting, and that’s not even optional in my head.

Ozzie

Ozzie is the laid-back opossum dad vibe who’s way more chill than any reasonable creature has a right to be; he plays dead for dramatic effect and also probably as a lifestyle choice. He’s wry, low-key clever, and has this sleepy wisdom that makes him sound like he’s got a thousand life jokes stored somewhere in his pockets. He’s the kind of guy who’ll offer a ridiculous life hack that somehow turns out useful, then shrug and go back to napping — frustratingly practical. Also, he’s both a bit of a coward and the most reliable backup plan ever, which I know doesn’t make sense but it’s true.

Heather

Heather is the sly, slightly exasperated partner who balances Ozzie’s snooze mode with a practical kick — she’s patient but not indefinitely, like a cuddly drill sergeant. Smart, skeptical, and very good at reading a room, she keeps the family grounded and also secretly enjoys small rebellions (stealing a cookie is a moral triumph in her book). She’ll roll her eyes at RJ’s schemes and then help execute them flawlessly because shockingly, she’s a planner too — but quieter, more efficient, and with better snacks. Also I’m convinced she collects old maps for no reason except aesthetics and the smug pleasure of making a point.
