About “Makeine” in a few words:

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! is a romantic comedy anime set in Tsuwabuki High School. The story centers on Kazuhiko Nukumizu, a plain and somewhat awkward student, who finds himself entangled in the love lives of several popular girls, all rejected by their crushes. With comedic twists and heartfelt moments, the series explores how these girls handle rejection and grow from it, while Kazuhiko remains an innocent bystander in their emotional turmoil.

Meet the characters from Makeine

Chika Komari

Chika is that sunbeam of a character who bursts into a scene with too many plans and even more stickers — like, she’s got a sticker for every mood and maybe a spreadsheet for them too. She’s relentlessly optimistic but also quietly terrified of missing things, so she overcompensates with color-coded lists (and then loses the lists in a sock drawer, classic Chika). Funny because she gives pep talks to plants and swears they respond, which I totally believe. She can be hyper-organized and chaotic in the same breath, and honestly that’s why we love her — she’s delightfully unpredictable.

Kazuhiko Nukumizu

Kazuhiko is the calm, almost unreadable type who probably owns fifteen different notebooks and a mysterious scarf that appears in every season. He gives off “I’ve read everything once” energy and will correct you gently on obscure historical facts while making a mean cup of tea (though he claims to hate tea, suspicious). There’s a softness under the composed facade — he rescues injured pigeons and writes terrible poetry at 3 a.m., which he denies later. He likes order but keeps a tiny chaotic drawer full of concert tickets and candy wrappers for no reason, so, uh, depth!

Lemon Yakishio

Lemon is sharp, a bit salty (pun intended), and somehow both the chef and the critic in her own story — she zings one-liners and then offers you a perfectly balanced snack. She’s sarcastic but weirdly sentimental about sunsets and vinyl records, which clashes deliciously with her “don’t touch my food” vibe. She’s practical, bossy in the nicest way, and will absolutely design a backup plan for your backup plan — and forget where she put the plans five minutes later. Also: eats lemons like candy and pretends not to, classic Lemon move.

Anna Yanami

Anna is quietly mysterious, like a midnight library with a cup of chamomile always half-full beside her. She’s thoughtful and observant; she notices the tiny things other people miss and then tucks that knowledge into a smile that is mostly warm but occasionally unsettling (in a good way?). She collects little spoons from places she’s never been and says she likes rain but always brings an umbrella anyway; contradictions! She’s the type who says one line and somehow changes the whole room’s mood, you know?

Kaju Nukumizu

Kaju is spark-plug energy — the inventor friend who makes gadgets out of paperclips and stubborn optimism. She’s loud in the best possible way and has a laugh that will get stuck in your head for days; she also cries at commercials sometimes, like, immediately. Loves a challenge, hates routine, and will fix your watch at 2 a.m. while demanding snacks and moral support. Sometimes she’s reckless and sometimes hyper-responsible, which is confusing but also deeply endearing.

Yumeko Shikiya

Yumeko is theatrical, dramatic, and lives for flavor — emotional, culinary, or otherwise — she makes even small moments feel like a scene at a café that serves confessions with espresso. She has this habit of arranging buttons by color and then forgetting which drawer she put her keys in (so dramatic!), and she’ll quote obscure lines from plays at breakfast like it’s normal. She’s intense but tender, a little impulsive and very loyal, and somehow always in the middle of a story that you didn’t know you needed. Also suspiciously good at fixing broken things, including people.
