Meet the characters from Painter of the Night

Yoon Seungho

Yoon Seungho is this enormous, brooding lord-type who acts like a fortress but is actually a mossy little marshmallow inside. He rules his house with a terrifying calm — you can practically feel the silence around him — but then he’ll do the tiniest, bafflingly gentle thing and your heart melts. There’s a heavy past stitched into every stiff collar and sudden blush; he guards people the way some people hoard books: obsessively, lovingly. He’s dramatic and stubborn and ridiculously proud, yet keeps little collections (stones? buttons? who knows) and hums under his breath when he thinks no one is listening.

Baek Nakyum

Baek Nakyum is the messy, brilliant painter who treats color like currency and emotion like a sketchbook — sincere, stubborn, endlessly curious. He can be painfully earnest and also wickedly sarcastic (he’ll cry over a bad brushstroke then make a joke five minutes later), and his moral compass keeps spinning no matter how inconvenient. Art is his language; he organizes chaos into meaning and sometimes literally eats snacks off the palette (gross but charming). He’s the heart in chaotic form, soft where you’d expect hard and vice versa, and honestly keeps getting braver even when things get brutal.

Jung Inhun

Jung Inhun moves like a cool breeze over still water — polite, scholarly, impeccably composed — but there’s a blade under that calm that makes you check your pockets. He’s precise, quietly loyal in the most complicated of ways, and somehow both comforting and unnerving at the same time. He probably hoards ridiculous romantic poems and also maintains a very efficient ledger of favors owed because of course he does. Just when you think you know his limits he does something unexpectedly sharp or unexpectedly kind and you’re left re-evaluating everything.

Lee Jihwa

Lee Jihwa explodes into a room like a firework: loud, flashy, full of bruised bravado, but really just a scared kid in shiny clothes. He talks big, picks fights, and makes terrible jokes, then shows up at three a.m. with dumplings if you need him (utterly endearing), so he’s reckless and oddly dependable. Jealousy is his default setting and pride his armor, which leads to lots of dramatic gestures and facepalm moments. He’ll make you roll your eyes and then do something unexpectedly loyal that ruins your cool and makes you forgive him, grudgingly, of course.
